EMDR and CPT and both evidenced-base treatment methods used to treat trauma, including Acute Stress Disorder, Post-traumatic Stress Disorder and complex developmental trauma, and can be used to help people process past memories and experiences that may have been stuck or frozen in time. Often times, I have found that maladaptive coping skills, including but not limited to addictions and eating disorders, can be used as a way to cope with trauma. Often times, when someone begins to get better from these disorders, they come to find that there may be trauma that surfaces from the past. Some people experience one traumatic event and others experience more complex trauma over time. These tools can help us to become unstuck and re-process traumatic events so that they are put into their proper place, as a part of our story, not the central part or focal point of our lives. Traumatic events can change how we see ourselves and how we see the world while also shaping our lives. Sometimes we develop beliefs about ourselves and the work that may be a result of just a moment in time, and notice that it can impact us significantly as our lives continue. By taking a closer look into these moment throughout our lives, we can process these experiences and change the impact they continues to have on us, sometimes even disrupting our current lives. Sometimes we find that unprocessed trauma can impact our current lives and relationships in significant ways. This work can help us to clear up the past and live in the present. I can also provide other coping and grounding skills to support this work, and have found DBT and CBT to be great adjunctive therapies in support of doing deeper trauma work.
